These papers shed light on critical issues affecting rubber farming communities and highlighted innovative solutions to improve productivity and sustainability in the industry.

Multidimensional Poverty Analysis of Rubber Farming Households in Makilala, Cotabato, Philippines: Presented under the socio-economic session, this paper provided valuable insights into the socio-economic conditions of rubber farming households in Makilala, Cotabato, Philippines. Dr. Eusala’s research aimed to identify and address the multidimensional aspects of poverty within these communities, offering potential pathways for upliftment and empowerment.

Prevalence of Major Rubber Diseases and Insect Pests in the Philippines, and Diversity of Pestalotiopsis Pathogen Causing Leaf Fall Disease of Rubber: Presented during Session I, this paper delved into the prevalent diseases and insect pests affecting rubber cultivation in the Philippines. Dr. Villanueva’s comprehensive study provided insights into the diversity of the Pestalotiopsis pathogen responsible for the leaf fall disease, offering critical information for disease management and prevention strategies.

PRRI also showcased its research findings through poster presentations. On 20th February 2024, Dr. Jill D. Villanueva and Dr. Cheryl L. Eusala presented 2 studies focusing on the encroachment of Pestalotiopsis leaf fall disease of rubber in the Philippines. These posters provided visual representations of PRRI’s ongoing efforts to understand and combat this destructive disease, offering potential solutions to safeguard rubber plantations.

In addition to paper and poster presentations, PRRI actively participated in panel discussions and breakout sessions addressing various facets of rubber research and development. Dr. Cheryl L. Eusala contributed her expertise to the Crop Improvement I session, showcasing PRRI’s dedication to enhancing rubber crop quality and productivity. Jess Bryan Alvarino and Jose Remollo III participated in the Socio-economic breakout session, focusing on socio-economic issues impacting rubber farming communities. Meanwhile, Ms. Melanie L. Santos engaged in discussions during the Socio-economic Breakout Session I, offering insights into strategies for sustainable development within the rubber sector. Dr. Jill D. Villanueva, on the other hand, contributed to the Plant Protection Session I, highlighting PRRI’s efforts in mitigating the impact of pests and diseases on rubber cultivation.

Dr. Jill Villanueva Participates in IRRDB Training Fellowship and International Rubber Conference (IRC)

The International Rubber Research Development Board (IRRDB) and the Rubber Authority of Thailand (RAOT) recently organized the annual Training Fellowship in Bangkok, Thailand. The event took place in different provinces of Thailand (Bangkok, Surat Thani, Krabi, and Pattaya) from February 6th to February 18th, 2024, and focused on youth empowerment in the rubber sector.

Representatives from various countries, including the Philippines, participated in the fellowship program. Dr. Jill Villanueva, the Officer-in-Charge, Chief of Crop Management Division (CMD) at the Philippine Rubber Research Institute (PRRI), represented the Philippines in this event.

The main objective of the training program is to enable young scientists in the IRRDB member institutes to become familiar with the development of the NR industry in the member countries and to establish an effective network among themselves. Participants had the opportunity to visit different research centers in Thailand and gain insights into rubber product manufacturing processes. Additionally, they will attend the 24th International Rubber Conference (IRC) in Pattaya City from February 19th to February 22nd, 2024. The IRC serves as a platform for professionals in the rubber sector to exchange knowledge and foster collaboration.

Dr. Villanueva will be presenting two papers at the upcoming event: “Diversity of Pestalotiopsis Pathogens Causing Leaf Fall Disease of Rubber in the Philippines,” co-authored by Dr. Cheryl and Tamie Solpot, and “The Prevalence of Major Rubber Diseases and Insect Pests in the Philippines.” Additionally, posters on “Encroachment of Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease of Rubber in the Philippines” and “Preliminary Studies for the Control of Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease of Rubber in the Philippines,” co-authored by Dr. Cheryl Eusala, Joseph Lorilla, Melecio Cordero, and Glen Corpuz, will also be presented.

The participants come from various countries, such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Côte d’Ivoire, France, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nigeria, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. During the opening program, the trainees also visited the Rubber Industry Division of RAOT, further enhancing their learning experience.

The Training Fellowship not only promotes knowledge exchange but also facilitates the establishment of global partnerships crucial for the sustainable growth of the rubber industry.

Addressing the Rubber Crisis: Emergency Meeting Tackles Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease in CARAGA Region

In response to the pressing issue of the Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease (PLFD) affecting rubber trees in the municipality of Trento, Agusan del Sur, an emergency meeting was convened on January 10, 2024. The Philippine Rubber Research Institute (PRRI), represented by Dr. Jill Villanueva, Training Specialist III, and Ms. Ma. Nita Roldan, Science Research Analyst, actively participated in this crucial gathering with the CARAGA Crop Pest Management – Regional Technical Working Group (CPM-RTWG).

The primary objective of the meeting was to provide updates on the current status of PLFD in the region and to formulate strategic plans for effective intervention and management control. The urgent need for a coordinated response became evident due to the declaration of a state of calamity in LGU-Trento, underscoring the severity of the damage caused by the disease.

Chaired by Mr. Abel F. Wagas, the Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulations, the meeting delved into the specifics outlined in Resolution No. 0523–2023. This resolution officially declared a state of calamity in the Municipality of Trento, Agusan del Sur, attributing it to the infestation of Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease on rubber trees.

During the deliberations, Dr. Jill Villanueva highlighted the crucial role of PRRI in conducting surveillance to support the data collection efforts of LGU-Trento. Emphasizing the importance of accurate and comprehensive data, Dr. Villanueva’s stance was reinforced by Ms. Jiji Espinosa from the Bureau of Plant Industry, who echoed the necessity for a well-informed response.

Among the key participants in the meeting were Chief Escolastico S. Cagatin and staff from the Trento Research Station, Chief Reynaldo Udarbe and staff from the Regional Crop Protection Center, and Chief Edelmira R. Luminarias and staff from the Research Division. Additionally, representatives from DA-APCO, LGU-Tagbina, LGU-Trento, LGU-Bislig, and LGU-Sta. Josefa was present, demonstrating a collaborative effort across various agencies.

The attendees expressed gratitude for the initiatives led by Dr. Cheryl L. Eusala, the Executive Director of PRRI, in addressing the crisis. The collaborative spirit displayed during the meeting fostered hope for more extensive collaborations and interventions in the ongoing battle against the devastating impact of Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease on rubber cultivation in the CARAGA region.

As stakeholders continue to work hand in hand, it is anticipated that the region will be better equipped to mitigate the effects of the disease and safeguard the livelihoods of rubber farmers in Trento and beyond.

Rubber Farmers Receive Agricultural Assistance to Combat Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease in Region 13

In response to the outbreak of Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease affecting multiple rubber plantations in the province, the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rubber Research Institute (DA-PRRI), in collaboration with the provincial government of Agusan del Sur, proactively implemented measures. This included the distribution of agricultural supplies and inputs on November 15, 2023.

Anticipating this initiative, 44 participants eagerly attended the Farmers’ Orientation and Ceremonial Distribution of Agricultural Inputs for the Mitigation of Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease in Rubber. Notably, before this intervention, a comprehensive clearing of weeds was conducted to prepare the plantations for the impending treatment.

The tools and supplies distributed to combat Pestalotiopsis included fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, machetes, safety coveralls, drums, garden hoses, and grass cutters.

In a virtual communication, PRRI Executive Director Cheryl L. Eusala stressed the importance of adhering to the treatment plan to effectively control and prevent the spread of the disease. She commended the CARAGA region for its proactive approach in implementing quarantine protocols, actively participating, and collaborating with PRRI in control and mitigation efforts against Pestalotiopsis.

Rubber farmers such as Simplicio Pasos and Pricilla Cabusas, proprietors of a two-hectare rubber plantation in Trento, Agusan del Sur, expressed gratitude for the assistance in combating the disease. They extended their thanks to PRRI’s leadership under Executive Director III, Dr. Cheryl Lazaga Eusala, and further conveyed appreciation to President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, DA Regional Executive Director Engr. Ricardo M. Oñate, and Provincial Agriculturist Hon. Armando Valiente for their heartfelt support to the rubber industry. The assistance provided has extended to the identified areas in the municipalities of Trento, Bunawan, and Buenavista.

The ceremonial distribution was attended by PRRI Senior Science Researcher Jill Villanueva and PRRI staff members Glenn Corpuz, Kim Gonzales, and Ma. Nita Roldan. Additionally, present at the event were the active Chief of Trento Research Station in Agusan del Sur, Mr. Escolastico S. Cagatin, and Rubber Focal Person, Ms. Joy Dumape.
